The
2nd Assignment of English-Indonesian Translation
1. ANALYZING
A PRAGMATIC TRANSLATION
I have analyzed a label of lightening day cream.
SL: Everyone’s
skin is different.
After years of intensive
research on more than 20,000 gene codes, Pond’s Institute make the breakthrough discovery of how a specific gene influence skin
color and created the GenActivTM formula. Dermatologist Tested.
This nourishing non-oily
light day cream with the new, cutting edge flawless whiteTM GenActivTM formula SPF 18 PA++ works deeply to lighten and fade dar spots, while providing
skin radiance. Discover your flawless whiteTM
skin like never before.
TL: Setiap
orang memiliki kulit yang unik dan berbeda.
Setelah riset intensif bertahun-tahun pada lebih dari 20,000 kode
genetik, Pond’s Institute menemukan terobosan bahwa ada suatu gen khusus yang
menentukan warna kulit, sehingga kami menciptakan GenActivTM
formula. Teruji oleh dermatologis.
Formula ringan tak berminyak ini diperkaya dengan GenActivTM formula SPF 18 PA++, terobosan dari
Pond’s flawless whiteTM, yang bekerja sampai ke dalam untuk menghambat
produksi melanin. Membantu membuat wajah tampak lebih puth, menyamarkan noda
hitam, dan membuat wajah anda terlihat bercahaya.
From my
analysis, I conclude that that translation is accurate and naturally. We can see in the last sentence that it
translated in accuracy of the information that was meant to be conveyed in the
SL form and it is not conveyed with other aspects of the original language version. “Discover
your flawless whiteTM skin like never before” translated as “membantu
membuat wajah tampak lebih putih, menyamarkan noda hitam, dan membuat wajah anda
terlihat bercahaya”. It represents that the translation is pragmatic
translation that is focus on the accuracy of information from SL, not on the language
aspects of it.
2. ANALYZING
AN ETHNOGRAPHIC TRANSLATION
Taking for example of the
ethnographic translation, I analyzed a food label.
SL: ROYAL CHOICE, which is made using a
world renowned traditional recipe from Danish and from selected ingredients and
good quality butter, making ROYAL CHOICE the authentic traditional butter cookies that is
tasty, crispy, and good quality.
TL: ROYAL
CHOICE butter cookies dengan
resep tradisional Danish dan dibuat dari bahan-bahan pilihan dan butter
berkualitas, menjadikan ROYAL CHOICE
sebagai tradisional butter cookies yang renyah, gurih, dan berkualitas.
At last, I
think this translation isn’t accurate yet as ethnographic translation although
it translated naturally. The words ‘butter
cookies’ and ‘butter’ are still
translated or written as in English (SL) without any explanation. It is the
characteristic of ethnographic translation to write the original name of words
in the SL form, but the translator should give more explanation; for instance,
by using footnote that defines the meaning of those words. This method is the best way to avoid the not equivalent words between SL and TL that caused by culture differences of both
SL and TL. Indeed, the translator didn’t give footnote that is why this
ethnographic translation isn’t accurate.
For the
word ‘butter cookies’, the translator may give footnote or explanation ‘kue kering manis yang berbahan dasar dari
tepung dan mentega’. Moreover, for the word ‘butter’ can be defined in footnote as ‘sebuah zat padat yang berwarna kuning pucat yang
tersusun atas banyak lemak susu dan biasanya digunakan untuk mengolesi roti
atau memasak’.
